GOALIE TOOLBOX LEARNING RESOURCE

‘Coiled Legs’ Instruction Video

VIDEO OVERVIEW

Skill Chunk: Knee angle of the legs for a stable base and aggressive balance
Core Element:
Active Standing Base
Technical Skill: High Crouch Stance

This instruction video will zoom in on the ‘skill chunk’ of a technical ‘Core Element’ and analyze the Body Alignment and Muscular Engagement needed when setting up and executing the ‘whole’ Technical Skill.

PRE CLINIC LEARNING PREP

Challenge yourself to mentally download the information by watching the video several times with the intention of understanding the activation and configuration lines needed to correctly execute the skill.

This understanding of the skill will better allow you to be guided by the instructors and correct yourself with a ‘deep thinking’ awareness during training clinics, team practices and in-game performance.

Estimated At Home Practice: 18 – 24 minutes

FOUNDATIONAL SKATING

Backwards Skating

SKATING SKILL
Backwards Skating

This video will demonstrate the drills and specific foundational skating skills needed when moving outside the crease with dynamic balance

Estimated At Clinic Practice: 5 – 10 minutes

FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT

Power Leg Separation

PRACTICE OVERVIEW

Technical Skill: Power Slide
Core Element: Active Power Push Base

This video will break down and demonstrate the skill pieces of a complex movement in a progression towards executing them together in sequence.

PRACTICE OBJECTIVE

At Home:

To better understand the progressions, It is highly recommended that you set yourself up in a quiet place to watch the video several times.

Then, without distractions, close your eyes and mentally visualize yourself executing the progressions as shown in the video.

By visualizing each progression and the final collaborated sequence, you can prepare yourself to physically execute the movement patterns with confidence and bring more mental awareness when it comes time to practice the skill.

Estimated At Home Practice: 23 – 30 minutes

At Clinic:

In a group format, you will be guided thru each skill piece progression and finishing off the Functional Movement drill with the ‘whole’ technical skill.

Being prepared with a good mental picture of the movement patterns will allow you to maximize the benefits of the physical practice.

Estimated At Clinic Practice: 5 – 10 minutes

DRILL CIRCUIT

Drill 1: Butterfly Glove/Blocker Save Technique

DRILL PACK
Save Selections

CORE ELEMENT
Active Butterfly Flared Base

SKILL FOCUS
1) Control Transfer Into Butterfly Stance
2) Knees Landing Under Hips To Maximize Balance and Allow For Top Of Pads Touching To Close
3) Press Into Stable Base While Shifting Torso Towards Puck That Is Tracking Outside Of Shoulder Line

Watch the video several times with the intention of understanding what is involved in executing so you are better prepared for when you practice it on the ice.

Estimated At Clinic Practice: 6 – 12 minutes

Drill 2: Power Slide Transition Technique

DRILL PACK
Down Low Transitions

CORE ELEMENT
Active Power Push Base

SKILL FOCUS
1) Foot Placement With Stable Edge Under A Balanced Tilted Torso
2) Hips High And Clear To Allow Power Foot Placement
3) Controlled Power Leg Separation into slide

Watch the video several times with the intention of understanding what is involved in executing so you are better prepared for when you practice it on the ice.

Estimated At Clinic Practice: 6 – 12 minutes

Drill 3a: Dynamic Transitional Movement

DYNAMIC DRILL
C-Cut – Butterfly – Power Slide – Recover – Shot- Freeze Or Follow Rebounds

BASELINE PERFORMANCE FOCUS
Executed at ‘Slow Flow Tempo’ (50% to 60% Speed) with a focus on mindfully executing the skill keys when dynamically transitioning thru each technical movement into position

MECHANICS –
1) Control Butterfly Transition With Engaged Edges
2) Load Power Leg With Correct Foot Placement
3) Ensure Secure Pushing Edge That Does NOT Slide Away When Generating Power Leg Separation During Push
POSITIONING –
1) Stop Center & Square on Puck In Shooting Lane
2) Freeze Or Follow Rebounds and Recover To Position

Watch the video several times with the intention of understanding what is involved in executing so you are better prepared for when you practice it on the ice.

NOTE: Tempo, technical skills and transitions can be adjusted according to the student’s training profile.

Estimated At Clinic Practice: 6 – 12 minutes

Drill 3b: Dynamic Transitional Movement

DYNAMIC DRILL
C-Cut – T-Push – Butterfly Stick Save – Single Leg Recovery To Post – T-Push To Center – Butterfly – Power Slide into Shot

BASELINE PERFORMANCE FOCUS
Executed at ‘Threshold Edge Tempo’ (80% Speed) that pushes explosive acceleration and transitional agility while maintaining functional efficiency when transitioning thru the movement patterns
into position and ready to read, recognize and react

MECHANICS –
1) Maintain Power Stance Position With Aggressive Balance During Flow Out
2) Quick But Controlled C-Cuts Out To A Hard Stop
3) Controlled But Strong Transition With Hands Loaded and Torso Tilted
4) Strong Single Leg Recovery
5) Use Both Hands To Trap and Control Puck
POSITIONING –
1) Stop Center & Square on Puck In Shooting Lane
2) Freeze Or Follow Rebounds and Recover To Position From Power Slide On Second Shot                                                                              REACTION –
1) Read Puck Releases Better Time Butterfly Transfer
2) Track Puck Into Body During Save
3) Agile Transition With Balance

Watch the video several times with the intention of understanding what is involved in executing so you are better prepared for when you practice it on the ice.

NOTE: Tempo, technical skills and transitions can be adjusted according to the student’s training profile.

Estimated At Clinic Practice: 6 – 12 minutes
