COACHING TIPS

  1. Watch with Purpose
As you watch the video, focus on how the slight adjustment to your foot gap—just past shoulder width—affects your balance, readiness, and ability to push with power. Notice how the demo goalie stays coiled and controlled, even while preparing to move.

  2. Visualize Your Own Stance

Pause the video at key moments and visualize yourself in the same position. Mentally cue yourself :“Just past shoulder width apart with even foot pressure.”
  3. Make It Personal: Build Your Own Spacing Tool
After watching the video, grab an old hockey stick and cut it to match your unique foot spacing. A good guideline is to take your standing height and divide it in half—this gives you the ideal distance between your feet when in your High Crouch Stance. This simple tool becomes your personal alignment aid, helping you build consistent muscle memory for proper stance width—whether you’re training at home or prepping at the rink.

  4. For Growing Goalies:

If you’re a younger goalie still growing, you’ll need to remeasure and make a new spacing tool every 2–3 months. Staying up to date with your body’s changes will keep your stance functional and strong.

  5. Use the Tool in Practice

Incorporate your spacing stick into off-ice practice, warm-ups, or even on-ice station work. Set your feet around the stick before starting reps to hardwire the correct spacing into your movement habits.

  6. Coaching Cue:

🔁 “Start every rep in a strong stance, not just any stance.”
Foot spacing is your foundation—build it right, and your power, balance, and control will follow.

Remember—every great save starts with a strong stance. Build the habit, build the foundation, and the power will follow.
