SKILLS & DRILLS CLINICS
CYCLE 1 – WEEK 1
LESSON PLAN PREVIEW
INSTRUCTION - AT HOME PREPARATION
Skill Learning Video
VIDEO OVERVIEW
Skill Chunk: Correct Foot Spacing for the High Crouch Stance
Core Element: Active Standing Base
Technical Skill: High Crouch Stance
This instruction video will zoom in on the ‘skill chunk’ of a technical ‘Core Element’ and analyze the Body Alignment and Muscular Engagement needed when setting up and executing the ‘whole’ Technical Skill.
PRE CLINIC LEARNING PREP
Challenge yourself to mentally download the information by watching the video several times with the intention of understanding the activation and configuration lines needed to correctly execute the skill.
This understanding of the skill will better allow you to be guided by the instructors and correct yourself with a ‘deep thinking’ awareness during training clinics, team practices and in-game performance.

PART A - ON ICE DRILL
Foundational Skating
Watch the video several times with the intention of understanding the foundational skating drill patterns so you are better prepared for when you practice it on the ice.
Estimated At Clinic Practice: 5 – 10 minutes
PART B - ON ICE DRILL
Functional Movement
TECHNICAL SKILL
High Crouch Stance
CORE ELEMENT
Active Standing Base
PRACTICE OBJECTIVE
At Home:
To better understand the progressions, It is highly recommended that you set yourself up in a quiet place to watch the video several times.
Then, without distractions, close your eyes and mentally visualize yourself executing the progressions as shown in the video.
By visualizing each progression and the final collaborated sequence, you can prepare yourself to physically execute the movement patterns with confidence and bring more mental awareness when it comes time to practice the skill.
Estimated At Home Practice: 23 – 30 minutes
At Clinic:
In a group format, you will be guided thru each skill piece progression and finishing off the Functional Movement drill with the ‘whole’ technical skill.
Being prepared with a good mental picture of the movement patterns will allow you to maximize the benefits of the physical practice.
Estimated At Clinic Practice: 5 – 10 minutes
PART C - ON ICE DRILL CIRCUIT
Drill 1: Standing Glove/Blocker Save Technique
- SKILL SEGMENTS
- 1. High Crouch Stance Alignment*
- A. Feet Place just outside shoulder width
- B. Knees bent forwards
- C. Hips hinge forward to bring shoulders over toes
- D. Elbows position in front of torso
- 2. Eye – Hand Coordination
- 3. Efficient movement of hands to puck
- 4. Glove or Blocker Save
*Primary Focus Point
Drill 2: Dynamic Movement Drill Post Side Stance to Overlap
- DRILL COMPONENTS
- 1. Post Side Stance Alignment*
- A. Feet Place just outside shoulder width apart
- B. Knees bent forwards
- C. Hips hinge forward to bring shoulders over toes
- D. Weight slightly shifted onto post side leg
- E. Inside arm fills the post gap
- F. Shoulders stay level
- 2. Depth adjustment to High Crouch Stance in Overlap Position
- 3. Save
- 4. Follow rebounds (if necessary)
*Primary Focus Point
Watch the video several times with the intention of understanding what is involved in executing so you are better prepared for when you practice it on the ice.
Drill 3a: Dynamic Transitional Movement
DRILL COMPONENTS
- 1. ‘High Crouch stance’
- 2. ‘Shuffles’ to center on puck*
- A. Maintain stance alignment
- B. ‘Push’ lead foot laterally by shifting weight on top
- C. ‘Pull’ back foot into position
- 3. ‘Standing save glove or blocker save’
- 4. ‘Follow rebounds’ (if necessary)
*Primary Focus Point
BASELINE PERFORMANCE FOCUS
Executed at ‘Slow Flow Tempo’ (50% to 60% Speed) with a focus on mindfully executing the skill keys when dynamically transitioning thru each technical movement into position
NOTE: Tempo, technical skills and transitions can be adjusted according to the student’s training profile.
Drill 3b: Dynamic Transitional Movement
DRILL COMPONENTS
- 1. ‘High Crouch Stance’
- 2. ‘Shuffle’ to centre of crease
- 3. ‘T-push’ to centre on puck
- 4. Save
- 5. ‘Follow rebounds’ (if necessary)
Primary Focus Point: Understanding of ‘centre’ and ‘square’ on puck
BASELINE PERFORMANCE FOCUS
Executed at ‘Threshold Edge Tempo’ (80%+ Speed) that pushes explosive acceleration and transitional agility while maintaining functional efficiency when transitioning thru the movement patterns
into position and ready to read, recognize and react
NOTE: Tempo, technical skills and transitions can be adjusted according to the student’s training profile.
