The foundation of an efficient Butterfly Slide is the ability to Coil Over the Push Leg to create a stable load before dropping into the slide.
When body weight is properly shifted and stacked over a vertically coiled push leg, the goalie creates balance, leverage, and controlled power before the slide even begins. That stable load allows the flare leg to drop with control and stability while the push leg remains strong and connected to the ice.
Slow the Mind Down First
Before the body moves efficiently, the brain needs clarity.
Instead of rushing through reps, slow the process down mentally first. Feel the weight shift, recognize the stability, and visualize the loaded coil before initiating movement.
Use short internal cues during the load:
“Shift.”
“Stack.”
“Coil.”
Then begin the transition into the slide:
“Press the push-leg edge into the ice.”
“Drop the knee.”
“Control with the core.”
These simple cues help connect awareness to movement so the body can organize itself more efficiently during execution.
You are not just practicing Butterfly Slides.
You are practicing awareness of the movement chunks that create the slide.
Structure First. Then Movement.
On the ice, focus on completing the Shift to Load and the controlled drop of the flare-leg knee before initiating the slide. Do not blend these actions together.
Stack your upper body over the push leg, maintain level hips, and press through the ball of the foot to create a vertically strong base. During early reps, briefly hold the load to feel the stability, then slowly drop the flare-leg knee into the slide position.
Once you feel comfortable with the Mind–Body Connection of this movement chunk, begin transferring into the lateral slide with control. Only add speed once alignment and stability remain consistent.
An Important Visual
The upper body alone does not create stability during the slide.
Stability comes from core control, proper weight shift, and strong leg activation. When those pieces connect, the goalie can generate efficient power and glide into the shooting lane with control.
If the Shift to Load and the controlled drop of the flare leg are strong, the Butterfly Slide becomes more powerful, controlled, and repeatable.
Own the load. Then own the drop. Then move.
